Architecture student, painter, and passionate observer of nature.
My name is Gerben Schievink, a Dutch artist inspired by the beauty that often goes unnoticed. A bird resting quietly, sunlight shimmering on the water, or an old sailing ship drifting by—these simple moments are often where a painting begins.
And, to be honest, Pinterest occasionally provides an unexpected amount of inspiration too. I often go there looking for one reference image and end up an hour later with an entire collection of new ideas.
Watercolour is my primary medium, allowing me to focus not on perfect realism, but on capturing atmosphere and emotion. Every painting begins with careful observation and gradually evolves into a personal interpretation of the world as I see it.
How it began?
Drawing has always been a natural part of my life. As a child, my notebooks were filled with as many sketches as schoolwork, and I was always eager to take on creative projects. My grandfather was a painter, so perhaps that's where my love for paint and brushes began. Over time, what started as a hobby has grown into an important creative part of my everyday life.

What I paint?
Painting is my way of capturing the beauty of everyday moments. I draw inspiration from nature, peaceful landscapes, flowers, and wildlife—subjects that may seem simple at first glance, yet often tell remarkable stories.

In the studio
A place where ideas gradually come to life. This is where I paint, sketch, and experiment with new techniques. Surrounded by paint, brushes, and reference photos, each artwork takes shape step by step until the final piece emerges.
Mediums
I primarily work with oil paint, while regularly using watercolour for studies and developing new ideas. Watercolour is an accessible medium that allows you to get started quickly and see immediate results. Oil painting, on the other hand, requires more preparation and patience, but offers endless possibilities for refining, layering, and bringing a painting to life with depth and detail.
